Dr. Matthew P. Buman
Director & Professor

Dr. Buman received his PhD in applied physiology & kinesiology from the University of Florida and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine in the area of epidemiology and the prevention of chronic disease. His research interests reflect the dynamic interplay of behaviors across the 24 hours - sleep, sedentary behavior, and physical activity - and collectively how these behaviors can be harnessed for health promotion. The majority of his work leverages personal technologies (i.e., smartphones, wearables) to intervene on behaviors across the 24 hours and promote health. Matt is married with two children and enjoys brewing beer in his free time.

Arlene D. R. Fernandez
Program Manager of Research

Arlene holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Exercise and Wellness from Arizona State University, where she proudly earned her degree. She furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Arts degree in Health Psychology from Northern Arizona University. Arlene possesses over a decade of invaluable experience in the field of health research. Currently, she serves as a dedicated Program Manager of Research at the 24h Behaviors Laboratory. In this pivotal role, Arlene adeptly manages a portfolio of National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 projects, contributing significantly to the advancement of scientific knowledge and healthcare solutions.

Gary Gorman
Administrative Specialist

Gary Gorman joined ASU in March 2021, bringing with him 22 years of administrative support experience—and an uncanny ability to keep things running smoothly, even when chaos knocks at the door. As an Executive Administrative Support Specialist, he’s a member of the ASU Precision Health Initiative team, the College of Health Solutions Design and Innovation Studio for Health (DISH) Committee, and Dr. Matt Buman’s 24-hour Behaviors Laboratory (24hbl), juggling schedules, emails, and probably a few coffee orders along the way.
But wait, there’s more! Gary also serves as the Site Coordinator for the Mountain States Community Engagement Dissemination and Implementation Training Academy (MS-CEDI) (say that three times fast), the ASU Digital Health Summit, and CHS Innovation Talks—which basically means he makes sure everything happens without a hitch (and if there is a hitch, you’d never know).
With over a quarter-century of experience in administrative support, Gary has mastered the art of organization, diplomacy, and the occasional eye-roll at unnecessary meetings. When he’s not keeping gears turning, he’s probably perfecting his system for world domination—one perfectly formatted spreadsheet at a time.

Dr. Masha Remskar
Postdoctoral Scholar
Dr. Remskar earned her PhD in behavioural science at the University of Bath, UK. Her doctoral research explored the potential of mindfulness training for helping people become more physically active. She is excited about the psycho-physiological processes connecting mental and physical health (e.g., heart rate variability, chronic inflammation, self-regulation), and their translation into behavioural interventions—in other words, she loves putting health gadgets on people and digging into all the fascinating data they can give us! Masha also co-hosts a podcast sharing the science of a healthy life—available by searching ‘Getting Brighter’ on any streaming platform—and is a keen proponent of Open Science. Outside of the lab, Masha recharges through scenic trail runs, playing board games with her partner, or hunting for the next favourite local café.

Harsh Anand
Research Specialist
Harsh Anand holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, India, and a Master’s degree from Arizona State University. Passionate about technology, he works on mobile and web app development, blending innovative solutions with research-grade tools.Harsh is a part of different projects like SleepWell, StandUpTV Habits, and Stand and Move at the lab. He’s spearheading the development of an iOS app for SleepWell, bringing his software engineering experience to the forefront to support cutting-edge research. With a background in software engineering, Harsh combines technical expertise with a curiosity for how tech can enhance well-being.
Outside the lab, Harsh loves to travel, exploring new places and cultures whenever he gets the chance.

Gillian Reynoso
Graduate Research Assistant

Gillian spent the first three years of her life in Mexico, but has been living in Phoenix, Arizona since. She is an ASU alumna, and received a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at the Tempe campus in 2019. She is currently a candidate for a master’s of Medical Studies through the University of Arizona’s Pathway Scholars Program. Physical wellness plays an important role in many aspects of healthcare, and so she is excited to participate in the research that is performed in the 24h Behaviors Lab! During the current pandemic, she spends most of her free time watching Netflix with her parents, meditating, reading fiction novels, hiking, going on walks, and having picnics in the park. She is happy to see so many coffee lovers in this lab, because she also appreciates a good cup. Overall, she is so grateful for this opportunity and is hoping to meet everyone virtually, and eventually in person when it is safe.
